THE CULFORD MALAWI PROJECT
Each year Culford School encourages their Lower Sixth pupils to take part in their Malawi project. Around sixteen to twenty pupils sign up and are split into four groups. The pupils then raise funds to cover the costs of their own travel to Malawi with a range of activities in and outside the school. They also prepare for the work ahead - many go on bricklaying courses to ensure they have some practical skills when they get there.
In the Spring before they are due to go, the groups identify a particular project they would like to undertake when they get to Malawi. They research this project in great detail and put together a fully funded plan. These plans are then presented to the Rosetta Trustees at a meeting. The Trust allocates funds to each of the projects to help them to deliver the objectives they have set out.
In June the groups travel to Malawi accompanied by teachers from the School who volunteer to help with the project. For two weeks the pupils and the teachers work in Malawi delivering the projects and then return home, exhausted but fulfilled.
The Culford Malawi project is the brainchild of an inspirational Culford teacher, Andy Deane, who previously worked in Malawi and uses his knowledge of the country and his network there to facilitate the projects. We are grateful for the huge efforts of the pupils and teachers at Culford who put so much into this project - we are delighted to be able to help with such a worthwhile enterprise.
